We are open and seeing patients with new COVID-19 protocols. We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 status and is actively issuing updates as they are available.aThe Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under Government of India and the World Health Organization are the most trusted sources online. As we reinitiate weight loss surgery, we are continually adapting and installing new and updated safety measures.
Weight loss surgery is medically necessary
A recent statement from the American Surgeons for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) says, “Before COVID-19 began, it was clear that patients with obesity were ‘safer through surgery.’ In the era of COVID-19, ‘safer through surgery’ for patients with obesity may prove to be even more important than before.” Obesity and Metabolic syndrome have been identified as an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes including death among COVID-19 patients.
The earlier a patient undergoes bariatric surgery, the quicker obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea and other diseases can be reduced or resolved as they are chronic and progressive. This leads to improved chances of recovery from covid as comorbidities after bariatric surgery either resolve or decrease in severity.
Diminishing Risk Factors
Weight-loss and metabolic surgery has a positive impact over metabolic syndrome in as little as 3 weeks. Weight loss surgery is also named metabolic surgery for the profound effects it has over insulin, blood sugar, blood pressure, lipids and other metabolic biomarkers. Medically controlled individuals are still at high risk for developing the severe form of COVID-19. It is for this reason that certain governments are now pushing Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery as a priority for their most vulnerable population.

IS MY BARIATRIC SURGERY COVERED BY INSURANCE?
The two major reasons that prevent a patient from undergoing bariatric surgery are
- Fear of surgery
- Cost of the surgery.
With advancement of technology in medical field, surgeries have become safer. Bariatric surgery is as safe as any other laparoscopic surgery for example routinely performed Laparoscopic cholecystectomy
With surgical disposables being increasingly manufactured in India, the cost of surgery has considerably reduced. At our centre we assure you best possible surgery packages in the region. Due to these factors, now India has become one of the most sort of destination for bariatric surgery for foreign nationals.
Bariatric surgery is now covered by insurance but it is on case to case basis. As per the new IRDI Guidelines, all the insurance providers will now offer bariatric surgery under their schemes to the clients who have purchases policy after 1st October 2019. For existing policyholders this will be active with effect from 1st October 2020.
A working group has been constituted by IRDAI to review the practices and make appropriate recommendations. One of the important suggestions from this Working Group is listed in Chapter III, point “F” of this circular. This explains, while every insurance company may want to enhance the availability of health insurance coverage to bariatric patients, the insurance policy contracts may allow for expenses related to the surgical treatment of obesity that does met the below conditions:
- Surgery conducted is upon the advice of a Doctor
- The surgery/procedure conducted is supported by clinical protocols
- The member is 18 years of age or older and
- Body Mass Index (BMI):
- greater than or equal to 40 or
- greater than or equal to 35 in conjunction with any of the following severe co-morbidities following failure of less invasive methods of weight loss:
- Obesity-related cardiomyopathy
- Coronary heart disease
- Severe Sleep Apnea
- Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes

This positive move by IRDAI in restructuring the health insurance in India, in favour of bariatric surgery will now enable patients with morbid obesity and its complications to avail treatment and remain healthy.
